Amid rising trade tensions, U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports, potentially pushing total duties beyond 100%. The move has reignited fears of a renewed trade war between the world’s two largest economies.
LIN JIAN, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson
"If the U.S. disregards the interests of China-U.S. relations and the international community, and insists on waging a tariff and trade war, China will be compelled to fight to the end."
In response, Chinese policymakers are stepping up domestic coordination efforts. The country’s top economic planner recently convened a high-level meeting with private enterprises to formulate strategies for mitigating potential damage. At the same time, sovereign wealth fund Central Huijin and other state-linked entities are injecting capital to stabilize markets, while the central bank is introducing liquidity support.
JI WENHUA, International Trade Law & WTO Rules Expert, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing
"Trump’s tariff threats toward China could also serve as a broader warning to other countries, signaling that countermeasures may be met with even higher tariffs. We’re now in a multi-party contest, not only in economic terms but also at the strategic and psychological level."
Regarding China's options, Ji noted that a response is expected, but the method will likely be more targeted and strategic.
"If the U.S. keeps raising tariffs beyond 100%, their effectiveness will eventually diminish. China can consider launching countermeasures in other sectors or domains where it holds leverage," he explained.
Yet questions remain over how quickly Chinese companies can adapt.
"For capital-intensive manufacturing and investment enterprises, short-term adjustments are difficult. But in the long run, companies must prepare for a more fragmented and uncertain global trade regime. International strategy must evolve accordingly," Ji added.
With both sides digging in, global markets may be entering a new era of uncertainty. The ripple effects from this standoff are likely to extend far beyond bilateral trade, impacting global supply chains and economic growth.
